Kick-Off & Connect (with Guest Speaker, Emma Kloes!) - April 22nd
Come join us for our kick off and information night for Jump Start Neighborhood Gardens which will be held on Monday, April 22nd (Earth Day!) at 7pm. We will gather in the Parish Hall of St. Luke's (4011 Major Ave, Madison, WI). Just enter through the red doors! Bring your questions, hopes, and visions!
Jump Start Neighborhood Gardens is like a "flipped" community garden model. Instead of starting a community garden on our parish grounds, and asking neighbors to come to us to garden, we'd like to provide free materials and know-how during the coming growing months to our neighbors so they might be able to start gardening at home and overcome common barriers to gardening (whether that's on a balcony, in their yard, or at another location).
About Our Guest Speaker:
Emma Kloes (she/her) sees farming, caring for land, cooking, and food preservation as pathways to deepen connection with self, community, and our natural ecosystems. She has been an organic vegetable farmer for five years at local Dane County farms and at her home-based subsistence farm. Beginning in 2021 Emma began volunteering at Holy Wisdom Monastery, where she now works as the land management team’s Land Restoration Coordinator.
During our April 22nd kick-off event, Emma will provide guidance on starting (or continuing!) your own vegetable or pollinator garden. She will weave the joy and importance of caring for the earth with necessary practical considerations: evaluating your space, soil preparation, pest mitigation, and long-term care for a garden.
We believe gardens, food, & community are all part of God's creation. God cares, so we do, too.
