St Luke's
The Rev. Don Fleischman’s first call in parish ministry was as the Associate Minister of Angola Christian Church in Angola Indiana. His call path has taken many unforeseen turns. He is very excited that that winding path has led him to St Luke’s. On that path, he has served in churches as a church choir director and musician, as well as a decade of ordained ministry in another Christian tradition. As the pastor there he operates under the assumption that the church is most like it should be when its members are off the church property working together, and being more seen than heard in the community.
He has an undergraduate degree in music from Western Michigan University, and received his seminary education at two different seminaries: Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and The Virginia Theological Seminary. The diverse seminary experiences have made him appreciate the variety of ways that people choose to follow Jesus, and he is committed to the followers of Jesus from different traditions figuring out ways to represent Jesus in their communities by acts of service and unity. He takes seriously that Jesus on Maundy Thursday prayed that his followers would be “one” instead of praying that they would be “right”.
Don is a truly bi-vocational pastor. He also works at UW-Madison where he leads a media production group. He views his work there, in a way, as another parish. He believes that those gifts that he uses to pastor at St Lukes are the same as those that he uses to help people communicate their ideas through media. In both cases, it takes the ability to listen to folks, and then empowering them to act on their convictions, and to tell their compelling stories.
